* MORE INFORMATION
The Malay Staff Sergeant (Athyma reta moorei)

30 Oct 2020. NATURE STORIES by Dr Sing Kong Yuen. SOME BUTTERFLIES ARE HARD WORKING EVEN WHEN IT IS VERY HOT AND HUMID. Athyma reta moorei butterfly.

The Esplanade-Theatres On The Bay’s Forecourt Garden has less than 5 species of butterflies at any one time when I visit. Many flowers but few butterflies and bees. Probably too much human spraying of insecticide and fogging to maintain a garden with flowers.

1 p.m. Very hot and humid. Bright sunshine. Blue skies. Most Singaporeans would be sheltered indoors if they have the choice. I thought all butterflies would be inactive when I went to the Forecourt Garden to look for them as my on-going project is to photograph butterflies and Oriental Garden Lizards in Singapore.

Wow, I had to correct my misconceptions. A rare sighting of a beautiful butterfly that just fluttered in front of me and did a dance. An uncommon butterfly in Singapore---The male Malay Staff Sergeant (Athyma reta moorei). I had not seen it before in The Esplanade or in Yio Chu Kang Crescent’s secondary forest---my two most frequented places for Nature photography.

This MALE butterfly did not dash away as most do. It hung around the flowers near me as if it wanted to and did an afternoon dance performance for me!

REFERENCE: The Malay Staff Sergeant (Athyma reta moorei) is an uncommon butterfly in Singapore. The video here shows a male which is brown. The female is yellowish orange in colour.
