3184. A 30-month-old dwarf hamster is operated for a tumour

June 27, 2018

This Myanmar man has several dwarf hamsters.

He decided to get the dwarf hamster operated despite the high anaesthetic risk and the very old age. The dwarf hamster lives up to 2.5 to 3 years and this one was 26 months old. Some pet owners will save on financial costs as the life span is near the end.

But he is not a calculating man.
"I get the operation done to make his life less painful," he told me.

"Doc," my assistant informed me during pre-operation preparation. "This is an abscess!"
"There is a big pimple seen," I said. "You could be correct. But it could be an encapsulated abscess or an infected tumour."

Surgery and gas anaesthesia revealed an infected tumour. Never judge a book by its cover.

3183. A Maltese was not operated when the tumour was small as the vet did not want to do it

This is a case where the dog could have been operated early as the tumour probably was not growing rapidly at the early stage. As the dog is old, some vets prefer not to risk their reputation on anaesthesia leading to death on the operating table. Some owners prefer not to get the operation done.

Blood test showed leucocytosis and neutrophilia --- bacterial infection of the blood. I advised antibiotics 1 week on, 2 weeks off.

Know your veterinary anatomy.
These swellings are not carnassial tooth abscesses!

Original images

August 2, 2018. This is the only image sent by the owner when I phoned up to enquire about the dog on Aug 1, 2018.

The owner did not return my call but texted the image as shown below. Wound heals very well, indicating an excellent outcome.

3180. A 3-year-old Beagle has skin rashes for the 3rd time. Muzzle ecezma seen.

This is 3rd time, the owner complained about itchiness and skin rashes in the whole body, some looking like ringworm. Culture for ringworm is done. Advised an anti-allergic Hills Z/D trial for 3 months and review. Anti-ringworm medication for 24 days.
