4062. JAN 2020 CASE STUDY - A dwarf hamster is stressed out by two everted cheek pouches.
27 Jan 2020 3rd day of Chinese New Year
A young couple saw the everted cheek pouch yesterday afternoon. I asked "Did you feed the larger sized sunflower seeds?"
The wife purchased such seeds few days ago as to give the hamsters a good treat.
Had 2 other dwarf hamsters fed on same larger-sized sunflower seeds (1.5 cm long) but had no problems.

So she did not want any more anaesthesia to do dental scaling. "The dog is eating well and looks good. I wish to try antibiotics first," she requested."I will come 2 months later if the gum swelling is still there."
Antibiotics were given. The owner did not return for dental work.

This 13-year-old dog suffers from a bleeding facial wound below the right eye. This wound does not heal despite cleaning and repeated antibiotics. Why? This is not the usual traumatic wound on the face. When you lift his right upper lip, you will see he also suffers from Periodontal Disease Stage 4. Stage 4 occurs when more than 50% of periodontal ligament connecting the tooth to the gum is lost to bacterial infections. Pus is formed around the 3 destroyed roots of the carnassial tooth. This is the big cheek tooth called the upper 4th premolar tooth. The pus collects around the roots to form the Carnassial Tooth Abscess. BLOOD WORK. The total white cell count shows an abnormally high number of total white cell count and the number of neutrophils. This blood test show that the dog has a blood-borne bacterial infection. ORAL X-RAYS. DONE. LOOK FOR THEM. GENERAL ANAESTHESIA. Many owners are worried about their old dogs dying during anaesthesia when the dog has dental work. In Toa Payoh Vets, we use only gas anaesthesia and no injectable sedative for old dogs. This is the safest method and least risky for old dogs. My observation during the past 30 years show that old dogs do not die from gas anaesthesia during dental work. UPDATE ON 27 JAN 2020. The tooth was extracted and the dog has recovered fully. In this case, the Jack Russell suffered from the left Carnassial tooth abscess and was successfully operated and has recovered fully.
TIPS AND ADVICES Tooth extraction is the most effective and least expensive treatment as compared to root canal treatment in the dog.
yearly dental check up for your dog is the best way to ensure that he does not suffer from carnassial tooth abscess or tumour as in another case. See video and images. Young lady came in to get her hamster's nails cut. She wanted to watch nail cutting.
"The best procedure is to put the hamster flat on the table, with the assistant clipping the nails while sitting on a chair!" I advised. Use a glove hand to prevent bitting.
A rare occurrence. Lady owner said "no problem" or inconvenience of eyeball rubbing.
3rd eyelid swollen. Redness and inflamed.
Treatment: anti-inflammatory eyedrops for 10 days.

During any morning visit, you will rarely see more than a couple of butterflies.
Oriental Garden Lizards - One or two on the tree or on the grounds dashing away from you.
Bees - a day or two.
Timing and luck. Not the main reason. Why? How? Urban gardens.
Fogging - so no mosquitoes, dengue fever.

TREATMENT OF EAR ABSCESSES IN RED-EARED SLIDERS at Toa Payoh Vets.
Most videos show the consultation video footages. It is not possible to provide videos of surgical treatments of every case seen at Toa Payoh Vets as it takes a lot of time to edit the videos.
Basically, the surgical treatment is performed under isoflurane gas anaesthesia by mask. The abscess is lanced, curetted and drained. The pus is thick like cheese and will not flow out freely.
Hence 3 days of in-patient treatment to clear any residual pus with the cotton bud, application of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory. I find that the above-mentioned post-op procedure of 3 days ensure that the owner does not come back with the recurring ear abscess within a month. A happy owner is the best client.

Case 5 is a rare case as ear abscesses in the sliders had never ruptured when brought to Toa Payoh Vets in the past years.
23 July 2020 case - Ruptured ear abscess
This is a rare case of an ear abscess that is ruptured. A clod of pus of around 3mm x 3mm hung loose from the left ear.
The owner phoned Dr Sing Kong Yuen, being undecided as to whether to get it treated by a vet. "Is treatment needed?" she asked as her 6-year-old daughter could not bear to part with the slider.
"Yes, there are more thick pus inside the ear. The pus needs to be curetted out. I ward such cases for 3 days to continue expressing the pus and give medication." She did not indicate whether she would come and came later in the afternoon.
