EMPLOYEES WHO ADD VALUE TO THEIR EMPLOYERS - Tourist Guide and Gondola singers

This is my first one-night stay at The Venetian Macao but my 2nd visit.

I had a beautiful view of the new competitor, Galaxy Integrated Resort, from my 30th floor window, South Wing. The view just reminds me that competition increases over time and there will be better equipped and richer competitors to beat the incumbent as well as taking business away from the smaller players.

The Venetian Macao has many tourist attractions especially the enclosed shopping area with branded fashion shops and an artificial sky and so tour groups have something to show the visitors. The new Galaxy Macau across the road has laser shows of crystals and singers performing on the stage inside the casinos.

Galaxy Macau Hotel provides 20 minutes free wireless internet access in its surroundings ground floor and a bus service to and from The Venetian Macao to its place across the road. The Venetian Macao charges $160/hour internet access in the room and does not provide complimentary wireless internet services unlike Hotel Panorama in Hong Kong. The Hotel Panorama is a 4-star hotel which charges $100/hour in the room but has free unlimited access in its lobby.

In this visit, I have some pictures of employees who add value to their employers.

CASE STUDY 1.  One example is the Macau tour guide I saw in the Venetian Macao. She was my Hong Kong guide during my last 2 visits to Macau. It was such a coincidence that I saw her snapping pictures for her tour group in the Venetian Macao in which she would bring tourists to view.

Tour guides need not bother volunteering photography for clients but she knew that the whole group would not be able to have a group photography without her. So she snapped photos for the group and for individuals.

CASE STUDY 2. At the Venetian Macao, I heard loud singing from some of the gondola rowers as they work at making the boat experience enjoyable. I don't hear singing amongst the original gondola rowers in Venice or those at the Marina Bay Sands Singapore. The audience clapped their hands in appreciation in this case.

In the end, it is still the service and performance of the employees that count in sustaining the business. Provided the new businesses don't go bankrupt due to lack of revenues and capital to survive the start up period.  Managing the talented employees is not easy as experienced ones are "in demand."

4814. Phobia of lizards

25 May 2023 Morning Walk. THE LIZARD.

"Don't move, there's a lizard!" the Indian father shouted to his daughter ahead of him and pulled the leash of the dog. I was looking for a lizard in this public garden near to Lentor MRT Station but it is uncommon. I looked at the father and son frozen like statues, through the gap of the leaves of the plants from the other side. I couldn't see any lizard from my side.

When they left, I went to the same location to try to photograph the lizard. None was seen.

This girl of around 8 years old will be frightened of lizards for life owing to the father's actions.

"No chance of photograhing a lizard today," I said to myself. I packed up my tripod gear and looked one more time at a tree trunk in front of me. I can't believe it. There is a young lizard basking in the sun!

4811. HPB's Fitness Challenge

I used to walk around 2 hours during Covid-19 pandemic taking photos of the butterflies and wildlife in Yio Chu Kang and to de-stress. In 2022, I seldom walk as the butterflies had mostly vanished owing to end of pandemic and increase in construction.

The HPB fitness tracker free of charge. Most important it has the free online record of the steps I take daily, without me having to upload and record myself.

If you use its features, you can check whether you walk more actively as there is a graph of your Moderate and Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA).

MVPA is the one useful health feature. Unless you have heart conditions or illness, the government health authority recommends 150 minutes per week. Do your MVPA as it makes your heart beats faster to circulate your blood and lymph

Make use of the MVPA graph to monitor. The challenge is to walk at least 5000 steps daily and accumulate 150 minutes of MVPA per week.

4810. National Steps Challenge. Health Screening at Singapore General Hospital.

24 May 2023.

NATIONAL STEPS CHALLENGE.

The Singapore government offers a free tracker watch and recommends 10,000 steps to walk per day, with at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPV). This program aims to get the residents to exercise and to reduce obesity leading to diabetes and heart diseases.

I find the tracker useful as I can monitor my daily exercise from the data which is uploaded online via the App.

DEMENTIA. Exercise moves the muscles and blood circulation for sedentary senior citizens and younger people. Blood reaching the deeper parts of the brain is said to prevent dementia.

SARCOPENIA.  Physical exercises tone up the muscles, preventing sarcopenia in the elderly.
Sarcopenia is characterized by loss of muscle mass, strength, and function in older adults. Signs and symptoms include weakness, fatigue, loss of energy, balance problems, and trouble walking and standing.

MOTIVATION FROM THE TRACKER. Without this tracker watch and online data, I was not walking much.

HEALTH SCREENING AT THE SINGAPORE GENERAL HOSPITAL ON 24 MAY 2023. I have borderline high blood pressure at 144/80.  I aim to walk at least 5,000 steps to try to lower my borderline high blood pressure naturally from 144/80 to below 140/80. This involves at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity which is shown by the App online.

2.  IMAGE. Tripod and shutter priority (TV) are important. Canon. TV 1/1000 sec, f/4.5, ISO 1250 for image. The tripod is there when the butterfly flew by, hence I could capture a sharper image of the butterfly.

HEALTH TIP. CONNECT WITH NATURE.

Sunlight enables our skin to make Vitamin D by a chemical process. People who are usually indoors will have fairer skin, but their blood Vitamin levels will be below normal. Vit D is important as it is needed as part of Calcium and Phosphorus to maintain bone health. To prevent osteoporosis.

You will note that recommended "Calcium tablets" sold in pharmacies in Singapore usually have calcium, phosphorus and Vitamin D combination.

Also spend “me time” with nature as retirees do get depressed and sedentary.

Not to over stress oneself by being sunburnt, as the skin will age faster due to excessive ultraviolet radiation.  Suntan lotion is always advised.

This butterfly has severely tattered wings due to traumatic injuries onto its wings as it flutters amongst vegetation throughout its life.

4806. TRAVEL STORIES BY DR SING K Y. Galaxy Ultra S27 v Canon R5

TRAVEL STORIES BY DR SING K Y. Smartphone v Canon R5.

An 84-year-old man told me that his Galaxy Ultra S27 takes better if not as good photos as my Canon R5 and it is less heavy. He showed me his photos with trembling hands. I got one of his photo and compare the same scene of Chinatown with mine. Is his phone superior? I don't think my comparison is fair as he has trembling hands and his photo was thus not as sharp as can be.

4806. TRAVELS SINGAPORE. Lentor Estate. Bright sunshine and blue skies at 8am in Singapore on 22 May 2023.

Singapore has bright sunshine and blue skies if one wakes up early as shown in this video of Lentor Estate on Monday 22 May 2023. There are darker days with thunderstorms but Singapore has much less flooding compared to New Zealand and other countries as it is a small urbanised country. Waking up early to go for morning walks will be much less hot and humid.

Brisk long walks can reduce weight, but few people bother to walk as it is hot and humid later in the day. Weight reduction and healthy diet means less risk of heart disease and strokes. Many young people tend to put on weight and be sedentary.

On 23 May 2023, I visited my brother in law. His adult son in the insurance career has put on much weight as he does not exercise. "My second job is to pick up my son from school," he said to me after spending hours inside his study room working from home.

His wife is now so trim and alert looking. She walked from Balestier to Vivo City and elsewhere, losing much weight. "I like to see the beautiful bungalows in Novena area as I walk," she told my wife and I. At one time, she was plump, but now she is much fitter and her face is radiant and eyes are bright. "No need to pay to go to the gym," my sister-in-law said.

Many residents give the reason for not long walks as the weather is so hot and humid. So they need to find air-conditioned shopping centres to walk the 10,000 steps but they seldom do that.

4804. TRAVEL STORIES BY DR SING K Y. NONI TREES. Three wild noni-fruit trees off Yio Chu Kang Road.

TRAVEL STORIES BY DR SING K Y - Noni-fruit trees

21 May 2023. During my walk, I was surprised to see 3 grown noni-fruit trees taller than me. Over 2 - 3 metres tall, growing on a sloping ground behind the Yio Chu Kang Road houses. They were blocked by a new bus shelter. The leaves are generally glossy green, but some older ones have been attacked by brown circular spots. Its juices are said to be therapeutic such as anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer.

Caucasians dislike the pungent smell of noni fruits. They complain of fermented or cheesy smell. These 3 noni-fruit trees grown on public land, outside the houses. They appear to be thriving and growing straight. It is possible that the residents of the houses have taken care of their nutrition. Many wild noni-fruit trees I saw are not growing well and tall above 3 m. I seldom see many in the Yio Chu Kang area though.

4801. Tele-consultation of 3-year-old red-eared slider with paw "abscess".

VET CASE STUDY – TELE-CONSULTATION ON A RED-EARED SLIDER WITH SWOLLEN PAW.
Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow).  20 May 2023.

On 20 May 2023 just after midnight, the owner WhatsApp to me the first image of the swollen paw of her 3-year-old female red-eared slider.  "Should I walk in or make an appointment? My red-eared slider has a paw abscess."

The younger generation cares very much for their pets and many will research the internet to arrive at a diagnosis. In this case, is it a paw abscess? I asked for sharper images and videos preferably. "The slider bites me," said the lady owner. "I can't take more images!"

What is the solution? "Turn the slider upside down and take close-up videos of the front and sides of the right fore paw," I WhatsApp back. She did an excellent job and I was able to tell that the swollen right fore paw as due to a long-standing inflammation from multiple wounds. So it was not just one paw abscess but several, over many weeks. She confirmed that.

What is the diagnosis via tele-consultation?

The free-roaming slider in the rooms could have her nails or paw trapped on some objects or had sharp hook-like things penetrating her lower paw and interdigital areas. Her water tank was free of objects or stones and pebbles. Therefore, the cause of the injury was her lifestyle of wandering in the rooms and getting injured over the past weeks.

4798. Photography: Friend or Foe? An Oriental Garden Lizard in Indonesia looks at me.

FRIEND OR FOE?

My last day in Bintan. I was walking past a patch of grass for dinner. A creature scurried across me. Too fast to see it. It looked like the big adult Oriental Garden Lizard. But it was camouflaged inside the hedge as you can see from the photos.

I screened the hedge where it had dived for cover. There was the body and tail not covered. The lightning flashed. A few drops of imminent thunderstorm. I should hasten to shelter to protect my camera from wetness. At least, to put it away inside my camera bag.

But this was the only sighting of an Oriental Garden Lizard in The Residence, Bintan. A sprawling complex of many house villas but no wildlife. No mosquitoes to bite me. A handful of small insects or flies. Nightly fumigation of the whole estate had wiped them out by pesticide poisoning.  So the guests do not complain and will refer others.

To shoot or not? The lizard did not move further. Why? It was eyeing me as to whether I was friend or foe?

18 May 2023:

FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY

Gochi-So Shokudo, Jewel Changi Airport.

Dinner at 6 pm on a Thursday. Not crowded at this time. Had Tenderloin Curry ($17.50) and BBQ Spareribs ($20.50). This is the second visit. The BBQ Spareribs were the reason for the 2nd visit. They were excellent as it was during the first visit - tender and not salty with sweet sauce during this visit. The one serving lady staff was helpful. To the Chef on duty: Keep up the good cooking of spareribs. 5-star for ribs.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP:
1. Use Tripod and AV Mode F/8 and ISO 400.

3.

4794. Impacted cheek pouch in a dwarf hamster. What to do?

FOR YOUTUBE VIDEO PRODUCTION by SHAH. HOOK (30 seconds of the final video if possible).

AUTO-NARRATION

Her beloved hamster stuffed his right cheek pouch to the maximum capacity for the 3rd time. This impacted cheek pouch of more than 2 weeks wafted a bad breath. The young lady took work leave to consult me in October 2014.

Bad breath of rotting vegetables wafted upwards to my nose. This was due to the prolonged storage of the decomposed food in the impacted pouch.  There was an ulcerated lip commissure.  The hamster had difficulty in drinking. It would have died of dehydration as days pass by.

“Surgical removal of the infected cheek pouch is the best solution,” I said.  “The pet hamster does not need of a cheek pouch to hoard food.”This time, the owner consented to the surgery and to accept the risk of anaesthetic death of her pet.

After the surgery, the hamster lived to the ripe old age. I did not see him or the young career lady since she accepted surgical removal of the cheek pouch which is the best solution.

FURTHER INFORMATION

VET CASE STUDY: Final Video - A dwarf hamster has an impacted cheek pouch again Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow). Year of video production: 2014

Her beloved hamster stuffed his right cheek pouch to the maximum volume again. This impacted cheek pouch had been present for more than 2 weeks. The lady owner took leave to Toa Payoh Vets to consult me.

Bad breath smell wafted from the prolonged storage of the decomposed food. An ulcerated lip commissure. I had advised the lady owner to limit food supply and evacuate cheek pouch regularly as she did not want surgery to remove the cheek pouch.

That would be the best solution as the pet hamster in Singapore does not need of a cheek pouch to hoard food. This time, the owner accepted my advice. She was no longer anxious after the hamster had no more right cheek pouch. The hamster lived to the ripe old age without having bad breath and needing veterinary treatment!

CONSULTATION AT 3RD TIME OF IMPACTED CHEEK POUCH. The owner decided to risk the anaesthesia to get surgery done.
