When male dwarf hamsters are housed together, they may start fighting. In this case, the bite wounds are infected and the hamster shrieks in pain when handled. Gas anaesthesia is needed to clean up the infected sticky fur and lance the abscess. The owner did not want anaesthesia as he thinks it will kill the hamster. He will do the cleaning and bathing himself.
The swollen left elbow area is now thick with hardened pus as the infection had been present for some weeks.
Another hamster has a flank tumour which ulcerated due to self inflected biting. This was excised at Toa Payoh Vets under anaesthesia.
